Spectacular overtaking show by Proton Huber Competition in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup at Spa

The Proton Huber Competition drivers performed spectacular overtaking manoeuvres in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup - bad luck prevented better race results.

One of the absolute highlights of the season lies behind the participants in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup: The participants in the international one-make series competed in their sixth race of the season on the Ardennes rollercoaster at Spa-Francorchamps. In addition to the cars of regular drivers Sebastian Freymuth, Roar Lindland and Alexander Tauscher, Proton Huber Competition also entered a fourth Porsche for guest entrant Flynt Schuring, who normally competes with the team in the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland. At 17, Schuring was the youngest participant in the high-calibre series.

After a promising practice session on Friday evening, the team from Hofkirchen in Bavaria had to contend with the weather conditions in qualifying on the traditional circuit, which is known for its rapidly changing weather. "Free practice was good, we knew that we were heading in the right direction with the settings. Unfortunately, things didn't work out so well in qualifying on the first set of tyres and rain came unexpectedly on the second outing, which made it impossible to improve again," said Michael Dirsch, Project Manager Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup at Proton Huber Competition. Tauscher and Schuring started the race from positions twelve and 14, while Lindland and Freymuth had to start from the back of the grid.

For Schuring, the race was already over after the first corner when he was hit by a competitor and had to park the car with a broken suspension. The race was all the more spectacular for Sebastian Freymuth from Berlin - from 22nd on the grid, he made up four positions on the opening lap. And Freymuth continued to plough his way through the field on the following laps, initially finishing the race in tenth place overall and third in the rookie classification. After celebrating the podium result, Freymuth dropped back to 15th place and sixth in the rookie standings following two time penalties for track limit offences.

"It was an incredible race! I never thought I would get this far at the start," said Freymuth after the race. "In the end, there were a lot of overtaking manoeuvres and I obviously also benefited from the incidents in front of me. It was a great feeling to be on the Formula 1 podium for the first time, but unfortunately I got the time penalties afterwards."

Alexander Tauscher was also initially fighting for a position around tenth overall in the race. However, an opponent misjudged his attack on the Mitterfelser, hit him and pushed him into the gravel. Tauscher was able to continue, but lost a lot of time. But in the remaining laps, the young driver fought his way up a few more positions and finished the race in 14th place. The Norwegian gentleman Roar Lindland finished in 20th position.

"Nevertheless, we are satisfied with the progress we have made. The setup worked well and we go into the next few weeks with a good feeling," said Dirsch in conclusion about the race weekend on the seven-kilometre circuit in the Ardennes.

The next race for Proton Huber Competition is scheduled for 16 to 18 August at the Nürburgring, where Christoph Huber's racing team will be leading the standings in the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland. The team will first complete a two-day test day at the circuit in the Eifel before another test in Monza, where this year's Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season will end in a few weeks' time.
