Harry King Vice Champion - Robert de Haan secures rookie championship
Great final of the 2024 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup at Monza for BWT Lechner Racing: Harry King crowned his successful season with the vice championship overall and another podium finish in P3, while Robert de Haan, the 18-year young Dutchman, claimed the title with making it to top of the podium in the rookie classification one more time and ending the season with an advantage of three points after eight hard-fought races. The final event of the year at the traditional fast track in the Royal Park also brought the Austrian squad P2 in the team championship.
The race was marked by a lot of action and three Safety-Car periods. Robert de Haan started from pole position after a great lap in the final minutes of qualifying, but lost out a bit on the always very critical sprint to the first chicane, having to settle in P3. Another very close situation there forced him slightly into the gravel, resulting in the loss of some more positions – but P7 overall and the rookie win was fortunately still enough to secure the rookie title.
23-year old Harry King from Great Britain, who was unlucky with traffic in qualifying, had to go into the race from P5 on the grid, but got a good getaway and immediately settled in P4 just behind de Haan and then made it to his sixth podium finish of the season, with one victory, three second and two third places.
Theo Oeverhaus had a very good first half or the race when he made up quite a few positions from P14 on the grid to P10. But then he got caught out by some dirt left on track had an off, which first dropped him back to P22. In the end he made it up again to P13, helped by a lot of action that turned things upside down again in the midfield.
Robert Lechner, BWT Lechner Racing Team Principal: “Congratulations to Larry ten Voorde and his team Schumacher CLRT for winning the 2024 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup 2024. For sure together with Harry we gave them strong competition and a very hard fight until the last racing weekend here at Monza. Thank you to Harry for a great season and securing the vice title! Huge congratulations to our youngster, Robert de Haan, for winning the rookie title, which has always been the aim and worked out in the last race. It was a challenging season for us against very strong competition, but P1 in the rookie and P2 both in the drivers´ overall and the team championship is something we all can be very proud of! For us after the season is already ahead of the new season – the next Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season will come for sure and from Monday onwards we will already start working hard to be very well prepared for it.”
Michael Schöch, BWT Lechner Racing Team Manager: “We started with the youngest driver line-up ever into this season and are very thankful to Harry King to share his great experience on and off track with Robert and Theo. I also want to say a big 'Thank you' to every single team member for their dedication and hard work throughout this very competitive season.”
Harry King: “It was not exactly what we came here for, but finishing on the podium and as a vice champion still makes me proud. In general it was quite a strong season with the highlight of winning in Budapest and a few other strong races.”
Robert de Haan: “Of course it is a great feeling to win the rookie championship! Thank you to BWT Lechner Racing for all they gave me over the whole year. It was not perfect from my side all the time, but in the end we got the title! Now I am looking forward to what is coming next!”
