Proton Huber Competition ends Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season with a record

The season finale of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup traditionally took place in the royal park of Monza. Proton Huber Competition entered four Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars on the high-speed circuit in the north of Italy. In addition to the regular drivers Sebastian Freymuth, Roar Lindland and Alexander Tauscher, the US American Dominique Bastien started for the team from Hofkirchen in Bavaria.

Bastien set a new record in the traditional racing series. At the age of 78, he is the oldest debutant in the one-make series and probably also the oldest race participant in the long history of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. This is not the first record for the US-American of French descent, as he is also the oldest driver in the history of the 24h Le Mans.

In qualifying, Alexander Tauscher drove to a strong fourth place on the grid. At the start of the race, Tauscher, who celebrated his first victory in the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Germany a fortnight ago at the Nürburgring, immediately lost a few positions. After a competitor spun him round after a few laps, Tauscher had to start a race to catch up, which brought him up to 17th place.

In a turbulent race, Sebastian Freymuth still had the chance to finish on the rookie podium after the final safety car restart on the last lap. But before the Lesmo bends, the Berlin was innocently involved in a chain reaction and crashed heavily into the guard rail, forcing him to go to hospital for a check-up. ‘We were glad when the all-clear came from the hospital. So he will be able to fully attack again next week at the Sachsenring,’ says Michael Dirsch, who is in charge of Proton Huber Competition in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.

Roar Lindland and Dominique Bastien showed a flawless race near Milan and finished 21st and 24th respectively.

Michael Dirsch concluded: ‘It was a very turbulent end to the Supercup season. Unfortunately, Alexander no longer had his luck from qualifying on his side and was unable to capitalise on his strong grid position. Sebastian suddenly had the chance to finish on the rookie podium on the last lap after the safety car restart. Unfortunately, he was also taken out of the race. We would like to thank all our drivers, team members, partners and supporters. It wasn't always an easy season, but everyone was able to take something away from it.’

‘Behind us lies a season with many ups and downs, with the downs unfortunately outweighing the ups,’ says Proton Huber Competition Team Principal Christoph Huber, summarising his team's Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season. ‘It was Alex and Sebastian's first Supercup season and history has shown that you usually need a second year to be able to call up your performance. Roar also put in a good performance, but it's a shame for him that the Pro-Am classification no longer exists, in which he has already enjoyed great success. Our highlights of the season were Alexander's great grid positions in Imola and Monza and his rookie podium in Budapest. But also Sebastian's strong performance at Spa. In addition to our three regular drivers, we also contributed to the success of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup with our many guest starters. The start of 78-year-old Dominique Bastien in Monza is also one of my absolute highlights, who did a flawless job at the weekend! Our focus is now on the 2025 Supercup season, for which we are preparing meticulously. We hope to line up again with the same three drivers and would like to supplement them with an experienced and fast driver.’

Alexander Tauscher finished the 2024 season as the best-placed Proton Huber Competition driver in 14th place in the championship, four places ahead of Sebastian Freymuth and a further three ahead of Roar Lindland. Tauscher and Freymuth finished seventh and eleventh in the rookie classification. Proton Huber Competition finished ninth in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup team standings.
